Perhaps no other entity influenced Warrick County as much as the coal industry. With the first mines dating back to the 1850s, the county soon became one of the largest coal producers in the state. In order to honor the area's mining heritage, the Museum of the Coal Industry was founded in the 1980s.
The museum welcomes approximately 2,000 people each year to browse through its diverse collection. Visitors can view a number of items ranging from a miniature dragline to an actual cab taken from one. Other highlights include a coal car from the former Tecumseh mine, as well as an impressive display of photographs. In an attempt to preserve the area's history for future generations, the museum is engaged in an ongoing effort to convert photographs into digital form. Members of the public are welcome to submit pictures related to the mining industry; originals will be returned.
Whether guests have direct connections to the coal mining industry or they simply want to learn more, the Museum of the Coal Industry offers a unique look into the county's past and demonstrates how coal helped shape present-day Warrick County.
