Travel Through Time in Historic Newburgh, Indiana

Step Back in Time as You Stroll the Beautiful Riverfront
in Historic Downtown Newburgh

These two words are often spoken as one: "Historic Newburgh." Now there's a way to walk through the town's history, thanks to a project supported by Indiana Landmarks and Indiana Humanities-Historic Preservation Education.

After two years in the making, the Newburgh Time Travel Trail, an interactive self-guided walking tour
of Downtown Newburgh, Indiana, is now open for all to enjoy!

Residents and visitors are invited to stroll the picturesque Historic Preservation District and stop at each of the 16 locations along the Time Travel Trail, marked by designated signs. Scan the QR code on each sign to see photos from the past of that historic location or building. Journey through time to see Newburgh as it once was.

This project was made possible through the Newburgh Museum , in colla boration with many local organizations and funding from Indiana Humanities and Indiana Landmarks !

This program received support from a Historic Preservation Education Grant.

The unveiling celebration took place on April 17, 2026 at the intersection of Water Street and State Street in Downtown Newburgh, Indiana. The Museum's Executive Director, Ivy Clark, had the honor of revealing the Trail's signature marker.

How Have Things Changed? What's Stayed the Same?

Newburgh, Indiana, has a long and rich history of human activity due to its prime location along the fertile banks of the Ohio River. Western explorers first discovered the area in the 17th centuries. But for centuries prior to that it had been inhabited by the Shawnee and was near the center of prehistoric Mississippian culture even as late as 1450 A.D. Today, Newburgh’s Historic Preservation District provides residents and visitors with a beautifully maintained walking and biking trail parallel to the river, specialty shops, antique stores, and unique dining opportunities showcasing a picturesque view of the Ohio River.

Use your smartphone to scan QR codes located in Historic Newburgh, Indiana, to travel back in time!

History is hitting the streets in Newburgh! Along the Time Travel Trail you'll be able to explore sites of the past such as the Newburgh Ferry Co. and the Newburgh Tobacco Co., the Exchange Hotel and the Citizen's Bank.

The Exchange Hotel was built in 1841 by Joseph L. Spitz on the southwest corner of State and Jennings. The original building consisted of the basement and first floor with walls that were twenty-seven inches thick and modeled on architectural plans that were brought from Germany. Be on the lookout for all 16 markers along the Trail route – about 1 mile total walking distance – to enjoy everything Historic Newburgh has to offer. We suggest you make a day of it! After your leisurely stroll, grab a bite at one of the local eateries and then spend some time browsing the specialty shops.

Newburgh Lauches $2M Lou Dennis Community Park Expansion

Intergenerational Recreation Coming Soon

to Newburgh, Indiana

The Town of Newburgh will break ground on the next phase of improvements at Lou Dennis Community Park on April 24 at 2:00 PM (CDT), launching a more than $2 million investment that will add inclusive play spaces, outdoor fitness amenities, and new opportunities for families to stay active together.

"We are incredibly excited to see this project move from planning to reality," said Newburgh Parks and Recreation President Mary Ann Wilsbacher. "This project truly reflects our vision of creating recreational opportunities for everyone in our community."

Midstates Recreation will lead construction of this expansion, which includes:

A fully inclusive and accessible playground designed for children of all abilities;
The Robert Emmett Griffin Obstacle and Fitness Course for children, teens, and adults;
Inclusive unitary safety surfacing to enhance ADA accessibility and support full-site navigation;
Fencing, shade structures, and seating areas.

The playground will be located next to the existing splash pad, with the obstacle course just behind it, creating a cohesive, engaging recreational area where families can enjoy multiple amenities in one space.

"The addition of the obstacle course and outdoor fitness equipment creates new opportunities for families to stay active together," said Town Administrative Manager Chris Cooke. "These features allow parents to interact with their children in meaningful, healthy ways while also supporting community wellness."

Lou Dennis Community Park has been enhanced through a phased development approach since 2018. Improvements have included the addition of a splash pad and playground area, renovation of the park building into a rental event space, construction of two shelter houses, expanded shade and seating, and a new basketball court. Town Council Member and Park Board Liaison Paul Perry said the project continues the Town's commitment to investing in community spaces.

"Investing in our parks is an investment in our community's future," Perry said. "Projects like this bring people together, promote healthy lifestyles, and enhance the quality of life in Newburgh."

Deputy Town Manager Andrea Balboni added, "This project supports the Town's 2023--2027 Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan, which prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and intergenerational recreation."

New Mural in Boonville

Have you seen the new public art in Boonville?

The first mural in a series of 6 in Boonville is complete! Local artist, Laura Engel, was able to live out one of here dreams by completing this project...and at no charge! In a recent post on social media, Engel states that nearly two years ago she was asked what she wanted to do now that she was moving home, and painting a mural on this 72'x14' building was it. Thanks to locals (Steve Smith), Visit Warrick, Old National Bank, the City of Boonville, and Boonville Kiwanis, the mural is finished.

The City of Boonville plans to add flower beds and other details to spruce up the base of the mural. So even, though the mural is complete, the project is still ongoing. The building of the mural is now storage for the City of Boonville however, years ago it was home to a factory where they would produce parts and Ford Model T cars. There is another mural in the plans to the North side of the same building to highlight the history of the making of the cars.

The mural portrays the history that Boonville, Indiana is home to. Ratliff Boon, pictured on the far left, was found of the city of Boonville and held the title of Mayor in the year 1818. On the far right is a familiar face most would know, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was President of the United States from 1861-1865. Before his presidency, Lincoln spent his time reading and learning everything he could about law and the judicial system. On part of his journey, Lincoln would walk miles from Rockport to Boonville to read books and sit on trials learning the law. As you can see in the ribbon on the mural it states, "Where Lincoln Learned the Law."

And what's even better than that...? We have more parks coming! Newburgh in particular, is in the process of reconstructing some of there parks and adding more in the community.

cleaner for our area so continue to check back as more trails continue to open almost weekly.
